5 WAYS TO CONNECT WITH YOURSELF DURING PREGNANCY
In the midst of all the new information you are receiving during your journey to parenthood, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that everybody else knows more than you do about what’s best for you and your baby. This could not be further from the truth. It’s time to finally pour into yourself and get to know this new version of yourself better. Below is some inspiration for how you can do that:
JOURNAL YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS
Pregnancy is a period of rapid change for your body, mind and emotions; this can be tough to process. Setting aside some time every day to jot down your feelings may help to declutter your mind and make those big feelings a bit easier to deal with. Journaling can also serve as a nice way to look back on your experiences and thoughts during pregnancy, which you can later share with your child if you want to.
SELF CARE RITUALS
There is no better time than the present to prioritise self-care activities that help you cultivate peace and regulate your nervous system. These rituals don’t have to take up much of your time, find ways to incorporate them into your normal routine, so that they become automatic habits you do without thinking. Being able to tap into your inner zen on command will prove invaluable during labour and parenthood. Not to mention, it is a great way to show your baby how to handle their own stresses in life.
MOVE YOUR BODY
In hypnobirthing we talk a lot about the mind body connection, and how intrinsically linked the two are. Exercising and stretching can, not only prep your body for your upcoming labour, but they can also help you to move those big feelings through your body, so that they don’t become stuck. The endorphins released during exercise can also help to boost your mood.
SELF AWARENESS
Examine your habits and mindset, is there anything you do often that is making you feel worse about your pregnancy or upcoming birth? Be honest with yourself about where you can make positive changes and take the initiative to prepare for parenthood by seeking help, educating yourself on what to expect and creating helpful habits that improve your wellbeing. Be mindful of who you surround yourself with and what conversations you entertain during pregnancy, some of your anxiety and fear may not be yours to carry.
STRENGTHEN YOUR INTUITION
Learning to listen to that inner voice during pregnancy and labour can transform your experience. You are the only expert on your body and when something feels off, trust that gut instinct and inform your medical team. Trust that your voice matters in your birth environment and learn how to advocate for yourself. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to be assertive. Some ways to strengthen your intuition include; checking in with yourself regularly to reflect on how you’re feeling, practicing mindfulness in your body and noticing all the sensations, and finding ways to trust your gut instincts and not second guess yourself, among others.
