THE MAGIC OF ESSENTIAL OILS IN PREGNANCY

The use of essential oils during pregnancy can be quite controversial, as medical professionals are divided in their opinions and not all oils are created the same. The majority of articles I’ve read on the topic suggest inhaling the aromas with the use of a diffuser, room spray or by sniffing the oil on a cotton ball; rather than consuming them or applying them directly to your skin. Every body is different, so always proceed with caution and consult your doctor beforehand. Here is how they can help:
BOOST YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING
These potent plant extracts work by sending signals to the part of your brain responsible for your emotions and have the power to boost your mood and general wellbeing. When you use essential oils routinely during your pregnancy, they can transport you back to a time of joy and calm when introduced during your baby’s birth, and serve as a prompt reminder to return to a peaceful state of mind.
Wild Orange, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lemon, and Geranium all promote a positive mood. Lavender is good for anxiety and Frankincense can help with postnatal depression, anxiety and low mood.
IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP QUALITY
Sleep can be an elusive concept during pregnancy, especially as you get closer to your due date. Introducing essential oils to your bedtime routine could help to trigger hormones conducive to a restorative slumber and help to settle your mind, so that you can wake up unburdened by yesterday’s worries.
Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain, Rose/Rosewood, Frankincense, German/Roman Chamomile, Ylang-Ylang, and Mandarin all encourage sleep.
PROMOTE RELAXATION
Combining hypnobirthing techniques with aromatherapy can be a really effective way to trigger deep relaxation during pregnancy and labour, which can help with pain management and regaining focus. When you’re focused on the aroma in the room, you’ll be able to distance yourself from the fearful mental chatter and pay better attention to your body’s cues in the present.
Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain, Rose/Rosewood, Frankincense, and German/Roman Chamomile all trigger a sense of calm.
EASE PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS
During pregnancy your options for medication are often limited, so it can be tempting to look into more holistic treatments. When it comes to essential oils, the science isn’t always clear on how effective they work as a form of plant medicine or how safe they are for pregnant women. There isn’t much regulation, so the quality can vary among brands. Always consult your doctor before using essential oils and seek medical attention promptly if you have signs of an allergic reaction.
Cardamom, Ginger, Lavender, and Chamomile all ease morning sickness and nausea. Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Ginger, Chamomile, and Frankincense all soothe muscle aches when mixed with a carrier massage oil. Cypress, Geranium and Lavender can soothe the irritation of haemorrhoids when mixed with aloe vera gel and applied topically.
BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM
Certain oils have been found to reduce inflammation in the body, lessen the negative impact of stress on your defences against seasonal bugs, and even remove some toxins from your system. These concentrated plant extracts can also bolster your immune system by stimulating the production of cells that fight infection.
Frankincense, Melaleuca and Wild Orange all help to strengthen your immune system.
